Chapter Twelve
You’ve become quite the dancer since you were last here.” Vera followed Dominic’s lead as they swayed with a host of other revelers in the Savoy Hotel’s ballroom. The large room with its Wedgwood blue walls trimmed in white molding with gilded accents hummed with excitement. The Dockland Settlements Ball was the first of the social events taking place in the run-up to the coronation. Even Princess Margaret, despite the absence of Captain Townsend, danced with Billy Wallace with all the enthusiasm of a deb at her coming-out.
“With maturity comes grace.” Dominic made an exaggerated step forward, and Vera followed his lead as if she were Ginger Rogers and he Fred Astaire. He was dressed like the movie star, his black tuxedo every bit as elegant. He hadn’t changed at all except for the faint honey tone to his skin, the mark of a man who’d spent many days outdoors at his father’s ranch, instead of the paleness of the near-sunless autumn he’d spent in Britain three years ago.
“And wisdom. What have you leaned since you were last in England?” She obviously hadn’t learned a thing from the heartache of having seen him off the last time, for there they were, as if they’d never been apart.
Dominic spun them around, making her pink satin ball gown with its fitted bodice and wide tulle skirt rustle about her legs and his. When Vera’s position as lady-in-waiting had been announced, a number of designers had rushed to offer her clothes in exchange for the right to brag about a member of Princess Margaret’s intimate circle wearing their designs. It was one of the many advantages of her position, and she no longer worried about paying the milliner bill.
“I’ve learned that my countrymen are as royalty mad as yours. When the nurses heard I was coming to London, they begged me for every kind of souvenir you can imagine. I’ll need another steamer trunk to get it all home.”
Vera’s hand stiffened on his arm. “I’m sure they’ll be quite obliging when you give them their gifts.”
He tilted his head back in scrutiny. “Are you jealous?”
“Of course I am. They get to see you every day.”
“Luckily, I’m not interested in any of them. I prefer someone with a little more exalted status.”
He squeezed her hand and whirled her into another spin. She held on tight to him, enjoying the weight of his arms about her and the giddiness of his attention. In the back of her mind, the warning that she should better guard her heart so it wouldn’t sting so much when he left again threatened to pull down her joy, but she ignored it. For the moment he was there, and she would wring out of their time together every ounce of happiness she could and leave the rest up to fate and the future. “What else have you learned?”
“That you’ve given up writing. Why?”
Vera’s steps slowed as she thought of the Remington consigned to the bottom of her wardrobe to languish with all her unwritten stories, including Lady Penrose’s.
